NetBSD Live! NetBSD 1.6 based CD-bootable system Copyright (C) 2002 by Joerg Braun ---------------------------------------------------------------------- What is it? This systems boots NetBSD/i386 1.6 directly from a CDROM. It was tested on several machines with ATAPI-CDROM and different hard disk controllers (IDE, ADAPTEC 152x, ADAPTEC 2940, AdvanSys SCSI). It needs BIOS boot support for CDROM and for a successful network access an available DHCP server. If you want network access without having a dhcp server you must ifconfig your network card manually. The system's kernel also includes PCMCIA and USB support. You find the kernel configuration file CDROM in /cdboot. To make new boot floppy images, you have to copy it over the INSTALL configuration file and build new boot floppies in /usr/src/distrib. In contrast to the normal GENERIC kernel of NetBSD 1.6 which shows green kernel message, the normal kernel of this CDROM uses red, the laptop kernel uses blue kernel messages. So can recognize immediately, if the correct kernel is booting. The laptop kernel is smaller than the normal kernel and has not the full number of network devices included. You should only use it if the normal kernel does not work on your machine. The NetBSD system itself has two users defined, "root" and "user". Both have a password which is identically to the user name. The system needs some user interaction when booting for host and domain name, date/time and X server. It is possible to boot into gdm where the following X desktops may be selected: -- KDE 3 -- twm startx from the console starts KDE 3.0.3 automatically. As major applications are installed: -- The nearly complete KDE 3.0.3 (no toys, no edu) including KOffice 1.1.1 -- Gimp 1.2.1 -- Mozilla 1.1 The system is able to use samba 2.2.3, but the samba server's name ist not well defined. It uses the system name and domainname for NetBIOS name and workgoup name. For the use of the Samba server you should edit /etc/samba/smb.conf and restart the samba server with smbd stop smbd start 7 consoles are accessable. You can reach them by typing F1 to F8 at the console prompt. Console 6 (F5 key) is reserved for X. Because of the lack of further space on the CDROM only German, French, Dutch, and Italian KDE locales are installed. Please read the documentation in the directory /doc of the CDROM. It is provided in HTML and PDF format. The PDF file is formatted for European A4 format. The HTML document uses neither style sheets nor frames. You can read in all web browsers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Security warning NetBSD Live! gives anyone full access to any NetBSD, FreeBSD or Linux UFS/FFS, or Ext2/Ext3 partition as user root with a very weak password. It is important to know that after mounting local partitions from this CD-ROM anyone may delete your password database and even may define new passwords and users. Be careful! It is possible, with very little knowledge of Unix systems, to chroot to a hard disk and work there as system administrator . This is a nice feature when you have no access to your own machine, but it is also a dangerous security hole. Be careful and do not leave the CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive of a production machine or of your server or desktop PC! I do not feel responsible for your problems. You have been warned! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LICENSE NetBSD Live! is Copyright Joerg Braun 2002 (that's me ;-) ) It is distributed under a BSD-style license. You may use it, distribute it and so on. But: If you make changes, I will not be responsible for them. Add your name to scripts you add and insert remarks with your name and address where you changed the distribution. And I do not accept that you sell my work under your name! That will make me very angry! If this happens, I will stop all further work on NetBSD Live! and will publish your name as the reason why I stopped that work. That will result in a lot of friends worldwide you will have! There is one restriction for distribution: Commercial distributors may only distribute the original version of NetBSD Live! with my written permission. I believe this is a fair decision for anyone. The original version of NetBSD Live! may be included to official NetBSD distributions without my explicit permission only by the original CD-ROM producers like for instance Wasabi Systems. Anyone who sells the original NetBSD distribution may add NetBSD Live! only if Wasabi or one of the original Maintainers of NetBSD will add it to the original NetBSD distribution as an additional CD-ROM. This exclusion of distribution does not affect members of the NetBSD community who show and sell this NetBSD version at shows or fairs to support NetBSD development and use. This type of distribution is allowed. And it does not affect people who give this CD-ROM to their friends, or copy it noncommercially, or give it in smaller numbers to local customers as a rescue system. This redistribution restriction does also not affect the download possibility, which is also allowed. Finally, this restriction does not affect people or companies who build their own customized distribution based on the original version of NetBSD Live! If you have additional question about redistribution, do not hesitate to ask me by email. No one need pay any license fees to me when distributing this CD-ROM. I want only to block some very special vendors whom I do not like so much from making money with other people's work. But I will name no names here ;-)
